A DeepSeek engineer has said the Chinese AI company remains committed to open-source development as a way of bringing forward artificial general intelligence, even if that raises safety risks, the South China Morning Post reports. Artificial general intelligence refers to systems that match or exceed human abilities across most tasks.
At the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen on Tuesday, where he spoke on a panel about AI, Gao Xi said open models encouraged shared innovation and technical breakthroughs, and described progress as a race against time rather than against rival firms. In rare public remarks from a company representative, Gao said that if AGI was ten years away he hoped it could come in one. The comments come amid safety concerns in the United States and scrutiny within China over whether the open-source strategy poses national security risks.
