India says it will develop its own manufacturing rather than make concessions to China after Beijing curbed supplies of tunnelling machinery, the South China Morning Post reports. Commerce minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday that New Delhi would not give in to pressure to secure technology from China and would build domestic capability if supplies were cut off.
Experts quoted by the paper say the curbs are unlikely to halt Indian construction projects but could slow major infrastructure work, and they have increased pressure on India to produce advanced tunnel-boring equipment at home. The restrictions also risk complicating the cautious improvement in relations between the two countries, raising doubts about how far economic links can recover while strategic tensions persist between the neighbours.
