Update: Israel’s attorney general rebukes Shin Bet chief as Netanyahu disputes election

·

Israel's attorney general, Gali Baharav-Miara, has accused the head of the Shin Bet security agency of undermining the rule of law, deepening a row over caretaker Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's challenge to last week's election result, The National reports. Her statement followed reports that Shin Bet chief David Zini wanted to question four Arab politicians over an alleged foreign-funded campaign to influence the 27 October vote.

She said citizens and elected officials could not be interrogated without supporting evidence. The agency told the Central Elections Committee on Wednesday that it had intelligence of large foreign influence efforts, but Israeli media reported no evidence had been handed over. Opposition leaders accused Netanyahu of using security officials to cling to power, as President Isaac Herzog begins talks on forming a government after no bloc won a majority.
