Emirati diplomat Lana Nusseibeh, who is standing to become UN secretary general, says Sudan's Rapid Support Forces must be held to account for atrocities committed during the civil war, The National reports. She said she would back UN fact-finding work in Sudan and make the conflict a priority if chosen.
Her comments followed a Politico report that Sudan's army-backed government opposes her candidacy because of alleged Emirati support for the RSF, which the UAE denies. Both the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces face accusations of serious abuses in the war, which began in April 2023. Nusseibeh, who has taken leave as the UAE's UN ambassador to campaign, entered the race last month. She would be the first woman to lead the UN and the second Arab after Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
