Residents of Cape Breton have been raising concerns about a planned artificial intelligence data centre at Point Tupper, the first of its kind proposed in Nova Scotia, Global News reports. More than 200 people packed a community hall in D'Escousse on Tuesday for an information session run by the developer, EverWind Fuels, which overran, and a second session was scheduled for Wednesday evening in Lower River Inhabitants.
The $10-billion, 18,600-square-metre facility is due to start operating by the end of 2027. The US AI company Anthropic has signed a 20-year lease and the centre would use 95 megawatts of electricity in its first phase, rising with a 325-megawatt expansion planned for 2028. People asked about environmental safeguards, jobs and the American tenant. EverWind said the concerns were valid and that more consultation would follow.
