Researchers on China’s Tiangong station have cooled a tiny cloud of rubidium atoms colder than any previous published mark, the South China Morning Post reported, pointing to a Science journal paper. University and academy teams in Beijing held the sample for roughly seven seconds, beating shorter holds in a German drop tower and on NASA’s orbital cold-atom lab. Outside physicists described the result as impressive and useful for future ultra-precise sensing of gravity, minerals and climate. The work expands Tiangong’s microgravity physics programme.
