Nigeria's House of Representatives has called for eligible federal roads to be handed to private investors under concessions and for toll gates to return on selected highways, Premium Times reports.
The motion, sponsored by four lawmakers from different parties and led by Esosa Iyawe of Edo, was adopted without debate on Wednesday. It urges the Ministry of Works to draw up a national framework for concessions through public-private partnerships, giving priority to roads in urgent need of repair and major economic routes.
Mr Iyawe said tolls on rehabilitated roads could repay investors and fund maintenance and road safety, while creating jobs and extra points for security patrols. He said any scheme must be transparent and affordable, with charges set after economic assessment and public consultation, and drivers seeing real improvements in return.
