Philadelphia woman arrested for blocking Uber delivery robot in jobs protest

·

A woman in Philadelphia faces a disorderly conduct charge after she refused to move out of the way of an Uber delivery robot she had been obstructing, The Verge reports. Carolyn Marvin told local broadcaster ABC13 that she regularly protests against the machines by standing in front of them, because she believes they are taking work from human couriers. Police asked her to step aside and handcuffed her when she declined; video of the arrest has since been widely shared. The small autonomous robots have become a familiar sight on pavements in downtown Philadelphia and have faced a backlash, including one being kicked over in Center City earlier this year. The incident reflects wider concern about how robotaxis, delivery robots and AI agents may affect jobs, particularly for lower-paid workers.
