A player from the Ayisat Yusuf Football Academy has died and several others were injured in a road accident while the team was travelling to a league match in Lagos, Premium Times reports. The academy's founder, former Nigeria international and Super Falcons assistant coach Ayisat Yusuf, said the squad had set out from Ikenne in Ogun State for a fixture in Ijesha, Lagos, and that the team's driver was also seriously hurt.
She did not name the player or describe how the crash happened, but said some of the injured needed urgent treatment. Calling it a devastating loss, she described the girls as one family and appealed for support for those affected. The paper notes a history of road accidents involving Nigerian teams, including a crash last month in which Crown FC's driver later died.
