OpenAI has published a set of commitments that include paying the full cost of electricity for its data centres, two days after US voters rejected data centre development in most local ballot measures, CNBC reports. For sites it owns and runs, the company says it will consult local communities, release construction plans and avoid non-disclosure agreements with public officials, and it is urging lawmakers to turn similar rules into law.
According to CNBC, voters backed curbs or rejected pro-development proposals in all but one of 41 local measures in 10 states. Chris Lehane, OpenAI's chief global affairs officer, said the blueprint had been in preparation since August and drew on lessons the company had learned. Concern over the facilities' effect on power bills, the environment and jobs has grown across party lines, while OpenAI is aiming to spend $600bn on computing by 2030.
