Blind shoppers in Finland shut out by touchscreen-only card terminals

·

Blind customers in Finland say touchscreen-only card readers are leaving them unable to pay in shops and restaurants, Yle News reports. Riikka Hänninen, 46, said she could not buy food for her guide dog at a Helsinki pet shop because the terminal had no physical keypad, she had no cash, and her phone was not set up for mobile payments. She told Yle clerks have even asked her to recite her PIN. An EU accessibility directive that took effect in June 2025 requires new terminals to meet accessibility rules, but older machines can still be used. The Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired said about 55,000 people in Finland have a visual impairment, including roughly 9,000 who are blind.
