A record 84.2 million people in Brazil had overdue debts in September, according to the credit bureau Serasa, The Rio Times reported. The figure, published on Monday in Serasa's debt and renegotiation map, was up from 83.9 million in August and is the first time the total has passed 84 million.
The number is about 6% higher than a year earlier and more than a third above the 2020 level. The average overdue amount was 7,093.83 reais, roughly US$1,305, per person. Brazilians in this position are known as negativado, meaning their name is on a credit blacklist, which can make it hard to borrow or buy on instalments. The paper said the data showed how stretched household budgets have become, with implications for lenders and businesses operating in the country.
