Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu has promised to put in place a minimum pension guarantee that has gone unimplemented since it became law in 2014, Premium Times reports, along with wider healthcare support for retirees.
Speaking through George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, at the National Pension Conference in Abuja on Thursday, Tinubu said a pension was earned pay held in trust rather than a favour from the government. The guarantee was set out in the Pension Reform Act 2014, and Akume said that promise had never been kept until now.
The president also pointed to the government's N758 billion pension bond, approved to settle outstanding pension arrears and strengthen the Pension Protection Fund, and to plans to expand PenCare, a healthcare programme for eligible retirees. The event formed part of Nigeria's first National Pension Week.
