Update: Indonesia deploys more than 20,000 troops to Jakarta amid wiretapping probe

·

Indonesia's military is moving more than 20,000 troops and other personnel into Jakarta while police investigate an alleged illegal wiretapping operation that targeted President Prabowo Subianto, CNA reports. Officials have not said whether the deployment is linked to the case, and an armed forces spokesperson called it standard procedure for national security.

A navy official said the first phase began on Monday with 2,100 personnel already based in the capital, with marine and navy units from Java and Lampung arriving from Wednesday, for a total of 20,980. Another 13,140 are on standby. The probe has led to the detention of two senior police officers and former police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who was removed as presidential chief of staff on Wednesday. Army officer Ariyo Windutomo, head of the Presidential Secretariat, has been named acting chief of staff.
