US Attorney General Todd Blanche has defended the Justice Department's lawsuit over Alaska's Senate race, in Sunday television interviews, Al Jazeera reports.
The suit, filed on 22 October, seeks to stop certification of a Republican defeat in the contest, and has drawn criticism from both parties. Critics say it could lay the ground to block a Democratic win; President Donald Trump has said he authorised it. Blanche accused one candidate of trying to confuse voters.
Republican Senator Dan S. Sullivan faces a close challenge from Democrat Mary Peltola in the 3 November election, which could help decide control of the Senate. A second candidate, Dan J. Sullivan, a former Forest Service worker also running as a Republican, has denied claims that he is a spoiler and says he has had no contact with the Peltola campaign. The department says the case protects the election's integrity.
