Hundreds of Brazilian pop music fan groups have thrown their weight behind President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva before the 25 October presidential run-off against Flávio Bolsonaro, The Guardian reports.
More than 600 fan communities devoted to artists such as Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and Brazilian stars including Anitta began campaigning online after Bolsonaro, son of the jailed former president Jair Bolsonaro, came first in the 4 October first round. The effort grew into a website, Fandoms Pelo Brasil, explaining how fans can get involved, and helped spark a São Paulo rally that organisers said drew more than a million people.
Fans told the paper they hoped to reach young people who follow fan accounts rather than politics. Lula's government had earlier courted them with an August decree targeting ticket-scalping bots.
