Police and Oranga Tamariki investigate community tutor in Waikato and Bay of Plenty

·

Police and the children's agency Oranga Tamariki are investigating a community-based tutor who worked with schools and community groups in Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, the NZ Herald reports. Detective Inspector Kevin McNaughton said investigators were working with schools and the Ministry of Education to find out which children the tutor may have met, and had begun meeting affected families.

He asked parents and caregivers not to question their children or make their own inquiries, saying such conversations were best handled by trained professionals to protect children's wellbeing and the reliability of any information.

Police stressed that being contacted did not mean a child had been harmed. They said schools and organisations had cooperated, and asked anyone with relevant information to contact them on 105.
