Alex de Minaur fights back to win Vienna Open opener and boost ATP Finals hopes

·

Australia's top-ranked men's player, Alex de Minaur, recovered from the brink of defeat to reach the second round of the Vienna Open, ABC News Australia reports.

He beat the Czech player Tomas Machac 1-6, 6-4, 6-3, despite trailing by a set and a break and facing 0-30 on his own serve in the second set. Machac had been six points from victory.

De Minaur won four points in a row to hold, then broke serve in a long game, survived a break point in a service game lasting almost nine minutes, and broke again to level the match. Machac broke early in the deciding set, but the Australian then took five games in a row.

The win keeps alive his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals.
