Tornado damages at least 20 homes and a school in central Chile

·

A tornado struck central Chile late on Monday afternoon, damaging a school and at least 20 houses and cutting power to more than 7,000 customers, The Rio Times reports.

The twister hit around 17:30 local time between Requínoa and the neighbouring town of Rengo, in the farming region of O'Higgins. Chile's meteorological service gave it a provisional EF-2 rating, indicating winds of roughly 179 to 218km/h, and the national disaster agency, Senapred, declared a red alert, its highest level, for Requínoa.

No injuries had been reported at the time of the report, and officials stressed that damage figures were preliminary. Tornadoes are rare in Chile. The storm came on a day of heavy rain and thunderstorms across the centre of the country.
