At least two dozen Ontario towns and cities chose new leaders in Monday’s municipal elections, CTV News reports, with pollster Nik Nanos describing the results as a warning shot to incumbents.
In Mississauga, first-term councillor Alvin Tedjo beat both the sitting mayor, Carolyn Parrish, and her predecessor, Bonnie Crombie. Keanin Loomis defeated Andrea Horwath in Hamilton, and Fred Francis unseated Drew Dilkens in Windsor, two cities hit by US tariffs. In Milton, Gord Krantz, mayor since 1980 and Canada’s longest-serving politician, lost to councillor George Minakakis.
Several big-city mayors held on, including Olivia Chow in Toronto, Mark Sutcliffe in Ottawa and Patrick Brown in Brampton. Mr Nanos said voters were anxious about traffic, safety, homelessness, housing costs and property taxes. The results follow recent changes of government in Quebec and British Columbia.
