Puerto Rico's Department of Justice said on Thursday it will prosecute a serving police officer in connection with a young woman's death in Bayamón, The Rio Times reports.
Dianelys Ortiz López was hit by a vehicle in March near a public housing complex in the city, just south-west of San Juan, and died on 31 March. Her father has said the officer did not stop at the scene, though one report says the crash was later reported at a police station. These claims have not been tested in court.
The specific charges have not yet been announced. The officer has been summoned to a preliminary hearing at which a judge will decide whether there is probable cause, and no date has been set. The officer has not been convicted and is presumed innocent.
