Pamela Wallin, the former broadcaster who has sat in the Senate for Saskatchewan since 2009, has resigned, CBC News reports.
The Senate said its clerk received her resignation letter, effective Sunday, and her official biography now lists her as a former senator. Her reasons have not been made public. She would have reached the Senate's mandatory retirement age of 75 in 2028.
Wallin was appointed on the advice of the then prime minister, Stephen Harper. Before politics she had a long career in television journalism and in 1985 became the first woman to head CTV News's Ottawa bureau. She was asked to leave the Conservative Senate caucus during the expenses scandal that began in 2013, after an audit found about $140,000 of her claims, covering travel linked to her corporate board roles, were improper.
