Sinaloa governor says more than 20,000 federal troops will stay deployed

·

More than 20,000 members of Mexico's armed forces remain deployed across all 20 municipalities of Sinaloa, Governor Graciela Domínguez Nava said on Sunday, The Rio Times reports.

The Pacific coast state has been at the centre of a war between two cartel factions since September 2024. The governor said the violence had become concentrated in fewer places but had not ended, so the troops must stay, with most attention on Culiacán, Mazatlán, Navolato and Escuinapa. She said car theft had fallen sharply but gave no figures, and no breakdown or schedule for the force.

The Sinaloa daily Noroeste counts 4,062 intentional killings between September 2024 and 18 October this year, including 130 violent deaths so far in October.
