Polling stations opened across Alberta on Monday for a referendum that asks voters whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the process towards another vote on leaving, the Globe and Mail reports.
Polls are open from 9am to 8pm Mountain Time. Elections Alberta figures show about 43 per cent of eligible voters had already cast advance or postal ballots, well above the 39 per cent overall turnout at the province's last referendum in 2021.
The independence question is the last of ten on the ballot. The others cover issues including migrants' access to social programmes, judicial appointments and the future of the Senate. Polls have consistently found most Albertans prefer to stay in Canada, though separatists have campaigned hard across the province.
