Brookfield and Drax plan AI data centre at North Yorkshire power station

·

Energy company Drax has agreed with Brookfield and its neocloud platform Radiant to develop an artificial intelligence data centre on the Drax Power Station estate in North Yorkshire, CNBC reported. Drax shares rose 8.2% in early trading in London on Tuesday after the announcement.

The project aims to have up to 100 megawatts of capacity running from the first quarter of 2028, with a further 500 megawatts added between 2028 and 2031. The partners then hope to secure more than one gigawatt at the site at a later, unspecified date. Brookfield estimates that total investment, including chips, could exceed £20bn, starting with £2.5bn for the first phase. The plan comes as European countries try to build the computing infrastructure needed for AI despite high energy and land costs, and power station sites with existing grid connections have become attractive locations for such projects.
