A Chinese People's Liberation Army air defence battalion has intercepted two new types of missile at the same time during a drill for the first time, the South China Morning Post reported, citing state broadcaster CCTV. One of the incoming missiles made a sudden, sharp change of direction, a member of the unit told CCTV.
The report on Monday said the Shenwei Missile Battalion, part of the Central Theatre Command Air Force, travelled thousands of kilometres and deployed overnight for the exercise, which tested a new weapon platform. It gave no details of the missile types, the timing or the location, though footage appeared to show desert in north-west China. In separate videos CCTV said the unit was equipped with HQ-9, HQ-19 and HQ-29 systems, the last an anti-ballistic missile unveiled at last year's Beijing military parade.
