The price of liquefied petroleum gas in Pakistan has soared since two border crossings with Iran closed on 17 October, cutting off imports, CNA reported, citing Reuters. Traders said a 12kg cylinder had risen 56% to 7,000 rupees, about $25, within days.
LPG is mainly used for cooking and heating, but many low-income drivers also use it to fuel their vehicles. The head of the Awami Rickshaw Union said about 70% of its members' 43,000 auto-rickshaws and nearly 8,000 Qingqi passenger three-wheelers run on it. One Lahore driver told the outlet his daily earnings had fallen from about $6.50 to around $3, and his family now ate only twice a day. The report described it as the latest energy shock since the war between the US and Iran began in February.
