Residents of Campbell, near Musina in South Africa's Limpopo province, are threatening to boycott next month's local elections unless the area gets proper mobile phone coverage, according to a Health-e News report published on AllAfrica. People say they have to walk up to a kilometre, sometimes at night through a crime hotspot near the railway line, to find a signal to call ambulances.
One resident described running out at 2am when her sister went into labour and taking about an hour to get through. Musina's council approved a phone mast for the area in August, and the ward councillor has asked contractors to speed up the work, saying Campbell has lacked adequate coverage for more than 20 years. A municipal spokesperson said it was talking to the regulator ICASA about areas with poor coverage.
