At least 153 people were killed in Monday's drone strike on a market in the disputed Abyei region, up from an earlier figure of 73, a local official has said, according to The National. Abyei's caretaker information minister, Yohana Ngor, blamed Sudan's army but gave no evidence, and said recovery of bodies was continuing as fires still burned. The strike takes the toll from a series of attacks in recent days past 250.
Diplomatic sources told Reuters the strike hit a fuel depot that had previously supplied the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Sudanese officials say the RSF is active in Abyei, which Mr Ngor denies. The oil-rich area is claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan. The UN condemned the drone attacks and said they were taking a devastating toll on communities after more than three years of war.
