Temperatures in Tokyo and Osaka rose above 30C on Wednesday, the latest point in the year either city has ever reached that level, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, CNA reports.
Warm, humid air from the south pushed temperatures unusually high for late October, especially along the Pacific coast. Thirty degrees is the threshold the agency uses to define a midsummer day. In Tokyo, where records began in 1875, the previous latest such day was 19 October 2024. Osaka's previous record, set on 20 October 1933, was also broken.
Japan had its hottest summer on record in 2025. This year the weather agency introduced a new term for days reaching 40C, urging people to treat extreme heat like a natural disaster. Scientists say climate change is making heat extremes more frequent and intense.
