Armed, uniformed Homeland Security Investigations agents have been going door to door in several states asking residents about their immigration status and whether they have registered or voted, a CBS News investigation has found. Internal documents show hundreds of agents were reassigned to the effort in at least six states, including California, Georgia and Pennsylvania.
The Justice Department said on Monday that more than 20 green card holders had been arrested in California over alleged illegal registration or voting. DHS says up to 250,000 noncitizens may be registered, a figure election experts dispute; the Justice Department says 156 people have been charged with voting fraud offences under the current administration, out of 227 million registered voters.
Protect Democracy, which is suing DHS, says the visits risk frightening lawful voters. DHS says people who are in the country legally have nothing to fear.
