Police were in a standoff with an armed man at a home in Massey, West Auckland, on Wednesday evening, the NZ Herald reports, and people were warned to stay away from the area.
Residents said officers were stationed on the road, the police helicopter was circling overhead and one person said they had been told to stay inside and lock their door. A loudhailer was used at one point to communicate with the man.
Hato Hone St John said it was alerted to the incident at 8.49pm and sent an ambulance, a rapid response unit and an operations manager, which were on standby at the scene at the request of police. Police had not released further details at the time of reporting.
