Canada orders deportation of Toronto man over role in Iran sanctions-evasion ring

·

Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board has ordered the deportation of Amin Yousefijam, a former Tehran police lieutenant living in Toronto, over what it called a crucial role in a group that helped Iran evade sanctions, Global News reports.

The board found he acted as the group's logistician, arranging shipments of electronics, motors and other dual-use goods that could have military uses. He was arrested in Toronto in 2021, extradited to Michigan and pleaded guilty before returning to Ontario, where he changed his name again. The board said he deliberately failed to declare his US conviction on that application.

The order was issued in July but only released this week. Yousefijam told Global News the matter was ongoing. The Canada Border Services Agency says it has identified 40 senior Iranian regime officials living in Canada, two of whom have been deported.
