A group of major Canadian news organisations, including Postmedia, Torstar, The Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press, has sued the AI company Anthropic in an Ontario court, alleging it infringed their copyright to build its Claude models, Global News reports.
The statement of claim, filed on 6 October, says Anthropic scraped large amounts of text from the publishers' websites without a licence, breached their terms of service and got around technical measures meant to prevent copying. It also alleges the company continues to scrape content in response to user prompts. The claims have not been tested in court, and Anthropic had not responded to a request for comment.
The same publishers, together with CBC/Radio-Canada, sued OpenAI in 2024, a case that has not yet been resolved.
