Comoros island of Anjouan seeks UK help over gambling licences sold from London

·

Anjouan, a small volcanic island in the Comoros, has become known for issuing licences to online casinos, many operating illegally, but a Guardian investigation suggests its name has been used by a handful of mostly British businessmen based in north London.

The Guardian reports that the unofficial "licences", covering gambling, banking and cryptocurrency trading, appear to be linked to people around the Sherm Group, a family property business in Finchley. The London-based investors deny selling licences to casinos that claim to be based on the island. Some of the casinos are accused of targeting vulnerable customers or refusing to pay out winnings, and at least one appears to be marketing to British gamblers.

The island's authorities now want to stop the practice and are asking Britain for help, according to the report.
