Delhi Police file at least 10 cases over assaults on electoral roll protesters

·

Delhi Police have registered at least 10 criminal cases over assaults on people taking part in protests in the capital, The Hindu reports. The demonstrators are demanding that the special intensive revision of electoral rolls be withdrawn and that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign. Most of the alleged attackers seen in videos shared online were described as right-wing activists.

Police said they acted after citizens, activists and political groups posted footage and tagged the force. Five people have been arrested in separate incidents, and CCTV is being examined to trace others. Four men were held over a video from the 10 October protest showing a male protester being beaten and a woman attacked. The leader of the Hindu Raksha Dal later said the four were members of his group and pledged to protect them. An official urged people to keep tagging police in posts about assaults.
