Problem Gambling Foundation calls for tougher ad rules as online casino licences near

·

The Problem Gambling Foundation is urging stricter limits on gambling advertising, saying offshore operators have ignored New Zealand law for years, RNZ reports.

Advocacy director Andree Froude said overseas sites had used social media, influencers and even graffiti on buildings to reach New Zealanders, despite being barred from advertising here. She said the current rules were confusing because different laws covered different operators, and argued that penalties meant little unless the Department of Internal Affairs had the resources to enforce them. She said gambling advertising should ultimately be banned.

The warning comes as New Zealand prepares to license online casinos, with 11 bidders securing the right to apply for 15 licences at a final price of $15 million each. Entain, which runs the TAB, said it operates under strict rules and invests in safer gambling tools.
