Dolores Huerta, the labour leader who co-founded the United Farm Workers union and coined the slogan "Sí, se puede", has died at the age of 96, NPR reports. Her family said she died at home on Wednesday.
Huerta spent decades campaigning for better conditions for workers in America's fruit and vegetable fields, and later for women's, LGBTQ+ and civil rights through her foundation in Bakersfield, California. She remained active into her nineties. Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012 and joked that he had borrowed her slogan, which means "Yes, it can be done", for his 2008 campaign.
Earlier this year she disclosed that the movement's co-founder, César Chávez, had sexually abused her in the 1960s, and that two children were born as a result. She was born in Dawson, New Mexico, in 1930.
