Seven of the 10 sunscreens tested by Consumer NZ did not meet the SPF rating on their labels, 1News reports.
The watchdog tested products costing between $4 and $76 per 100ml. All met broad-spectrum requirements based on their tested SPF, and six of those that fell short still gave high protection of SPF 30 or more. However, one of the most expensive, Coola Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Lotion 50, tested at only SPF 14. Smart365, the cheapest product, met its claims, as did sunscreens from the Cancer Society and Cetaphil.
Consumer NZ said some companies supplied earlier test reports or arranged retesting, while others declined or did not respond; Coola's distributor would not comment. The group said the results showed the need for regular testing, as New Zealand law does not set how often sunscreens must be tested.
