The Guardian has set out what is known about allegations that Democrats in Alaska tried to confuse voters by recruiting candidates sharing the name of Republican Senator Dan Sullivan.
A man named Dan J Sullivan entered the race as a Republican in May, alongside the incumbent Dan S Sullivan and the Democratic challenger, former congresswoman Mary Peltola. Peltola's campaign denied encouraging him. However, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing at least a dozen people, that her campaign had sought to recruit him and others with the same name.
Dan J Sullivan has said he was not trying to trick anyone. Ballot stacking is not illegal in itself, but President Donald Trump and the Justice Department have filed a lawsuit aimed at blocking certification of the result if the incumbent loses. The contest could help decide control of the Senate.
