Seven tankers carrying Russian diesel head for US under Trump-Putin supply deal

·

Seven tankers loaded with roughly 288,000 tonnes of diesel from Russia are on their way to the United States, The Guardian reports, citing tracking by Greenpeace, though it is unclear whether they will be allowed to unload.

The cargoes are the first stage of a deal agreed this month between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, under which Russia is to supply 1.8 million tonnes of diesel. Trump issued a six-month waiver on sanctions to allow the shipments. Earlier reports had counted only three tankers leaving Russia's Baltic terminals. When Greenpeace published its map, one vessel was relatively near the US while several were close to the UK or in the English Channel.

Greenpeace Ukraine's Shaun Burnie said Congress or local US authorities should halt the shipments and that Russia should face tougher sanctions rather than be rewarded for the war.
