EU leaders to press Burnham for more Ukraine funding at November summit

·

European Union leaders plan to ask Prime Minister Andy Burnham to contribute more towards Ukraine's defence in 2027 when he meets Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa at an EU-UK summit in Brussels on 20 November, The Guardian reports.

Ukraine says it faces a €70bn shortfall next year. Brussels says the EU and its members cover 80% of Kyiv's financial needs, against the two-thirds it regards as a fair share. The UK says it has committed £25bn, including £16bn in military aid, although the Kiel Institute ranks its support below France and Germany as a share of national income.

The summit is expected to agree deals on food and animal health checks, linking carbon trading schemes and youth mobility, with the dispute over university tuition fees set to be deferred to later talks.
