Growing everyday use of artificial intelligence is fuelling the construction of data centres across Norway, according to a report by the public broadcaster NRK. The country already has more than 100 data storage centres, and dozens more are being built.
Reynir Jóhannesson, head of the Norwegian data centre industry body, told NRK that the expansion reflects rising demand and that many of the new sites are intended for AI services and the training of language models. Tom Ryen, who leads the department of computer and electrical engineering at the University of Stavanger, warned that many small individual uses add up to a large drain on electricity and water. Some young users said they were trying to cut back for environmental reasons, though several admitted they did not know how much power their use consumed.
