Christopher Landau, a senior US State Department official for the Western Hemisphere, is touring Paraguay and Argentina from 19 to 26 October with Juan Pablo Segura, an Argentine-born businessman appointed to a senior regional post in August, the Buenos Aires Times reports.
Security, drug trafficking and investment top the agenda. The pair start in Asunción before meeting Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno in Buenos Aires on Thursday, along with officials and business leaders. They aim to build on the recently launched Andes-Atlantic Corridor infrastructure agreement between the two countries.
Landau is not expected to meet President Javier Milei, who is due in Spain on 21 October. The visit reflects Washington's push to strengthen alliances in the region and limit the influence of outside powers such as China.
