Flights to and from Toronto Pearson airport were delayed on Tuesday night after reports of smoke led to the evacuation of the tower that manages aircraft movements around the gates, CBC News reports. The airport said on X that staff had since returned to its apron management unit tower, but that an air traffic management measure was causing delays to arrivals and departures, and advised passengers to check with their airlines.
NAV Canada, which runs air traffic control, said its own tower had not been evacuated and that communication between pilots and controllers was unaffected. The apron unit is operated by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. Air Canada told affected passengers the safety incident was outside its control and that it was working to reduce the disruption across multiple flights.
