Update: Danielle Smith rules out another Alberta secession referendum while she is premier

·

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has said she will not hold another referendum on leaving Canada for as long as she is premier, the National Post reports. In a televised address on Tuesday evening, her first public remarks since Monday's vote, she urged separatist supporters to "believe and hope in Canada again".

With 90% of voting stations reporting, about 75% of voters chose to stay in Canada rather than hold a second, binding vote on independence. Smith acknowledged frustrations with Ottawa, particularly under Justin Trudeau, but pointed to recent deals with Prime Minister Mark Carney, including federal backing for a West Coast oil pipeline and a commitment to four military bases in the province. She said results on the other questions suggested voters wanted Alberta to take more control over immigration and charge temporary residents for some public services.
