Former Punjab MLA Simarjeet Bains jailed for a year over defamation of ex-minister

·

A court in Patiala has sentenced former Punjab MLA Simarjeet Singh Bains to one year of rigorous imprisonment for defaming former state health minister Brahm Mohindra, The Hindu reports.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Ekta Sahota found Bains guilty under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code, ruling that Mohindra had proved his case with oral and documentary evidence. The case dates from 2018, when Bains alleged irregularities in the buying of medicines for Punjab's de-addiction centres and claimed Mohindra had links to a pharmaceutical company.

The court found that Bains had not produced enough firm evidence to support his claims, and that the allegations had harmed Mohindra's social and political standing. The verdict was delivered on Monday.
