Alan Jones, Australia’s 1980 Formula One world champion, has died aged 80 after a short illness, ABC News reports. A statement from his wife, Amanda Butler-Davis, said he died on 5 November, days after his 80th birthday, and thanked fans and friends for their support.
Jones won 12 grands prix and joined Sir Jack Brabham as one of only two Australians to take the drivers’ title. Born in Melbourne in 1946, he followed his father Stan, winner of the 1959 Australian Grand Prix, into racing and built his career in Europe. Tributes stressed his lasting mark on motorsport at home and abroad.
