Protests by secondary school pupils in France have restarted after the two-week autumn holiday, but on a far smaller scale than before the break, Al Jazeera reports.
The education ministry said 41 lycées, about 1% of the country's 3,700, were blockaded on Monday, compared with hundreds in earlier weeks. Education Minister Edouard Geffray said protest was permitted but stopping access to schools was illegal, warning that the school year was at risk for several hundred thousand pupils.
The movement began in the Paris suburbs in September and widened to cost-of-living grievances, with some clashes and looting. Last week the government promised to phase out the Parcoursup university admissions platform by 2028, scrap planned job cuts, add 500 posts and spend €4bn renovating schools. Student unions said this was not enough and have called further blockades for Tuesday and Thursday.
