China's foreign minister Wang Yi has urged Iran to pursue a political settlement rather than renewed fighting, as fears of a fresh US strike hang over the region, the South China Morning Post reports.
Meeting Ali Bagheri Kani, a deputy head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, in Beijing on Monday, Mr Wang said that with conflicts in the Middle East continuing and at risk of spreading, dialogue and negotiation were the only workable route. He called on all sides to take a rational and pragmatic approach instead of returning to armed conflict.
The Iranian official said Tehran would defend its sovereignty. The meeting is part of a wider round of Chinese diplomacy across Africa and the Middle East, according to the newspaper.
